Mwanza — TWO people have died and 36 others were seriously injured in an accident involving a Bunda Express bus at Ngashe Village, Kahangala ward in Magu district, Mwanza region.
The Mwanza Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Ernest Mangu, said here that the accident occurred at around 08:00 am when the bus was travelling from Bunda to Mutukula at the border between Tanzania and Uganda.
"The driver who was not immediately identified escaped from the scene of the accident and police are searching for him," said the RPC. The RPC noted that initial findings show that the accident was caused by overspeeding, causing the bus driver to lose control of the vehicle which later overturned.
Mr Mangu observed that it has been raining in the area and had the driver been a little bit more careful considering the weather, the accident might have been avoided. In another incident, police in Mbeya are holding 24 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia arrested near Kasumulu border in Kyela District in the region on Tuesday.
Mbeya Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Diwani Athumani, told the 'Daily News' yesterday that the police apprehended the suspects while on patrol near the border, noting that the suspects would be handed over to the Immigration Department for legal action.
He, however, would not disclose the names of the suspects. He also said police arrested two suspects in possession of stolen copper whose value was not immediately established, saying the duo ransacked the minerals after breaking in a transit lorry from Zambia to Dar es Salaam.
He named Daudi Watson (31) of Ubaruku in Mbarali District and Simon Kabasi (23) of Uyole in Mbeya municipality as the apprehended suspects.
